Hy’s of Canada is pleased to congratulate culinary student Darya Grytsenko, the 2021 recipient of the Vancouver Community College (VCC) John Aisenstat Memorial Scholarship. First established in 2019, the endowment program provides financial assistance to individuals pursuing studies in hospitality and culinary arts.
Hy’s has a long history of supporting philanthropic causes and giving back to its communities. The John Aisenstat Memorial Scholarship commemorates Hy’s beloved Executive Vice President, who passed away in 2018. The youngest son of restaurant founder Hy Aisenstat, John Aisenstat was an ardent supporter of continuing education and strongly believed in encouraging young stars within the hospitality industry.
“John was a true restaurateur and embodied the Hy’s spirit,” said older brother and Hy’s President & CEO, Neil Aisenstat. “We’re so pleased to award this scholarship to young hospitality talent to help carry on his legacy.”
As this year’s scholarship winner, Grytsenko was recognized for her dedication to her studies and passion for the industry. The emerging culinary star developed a love of cooking as a young child and hopes to continue her education at VCC to further hone her skills and eventually obtain her Red Seal Chef designation.
“As the recipient of the John Aisenstat Memorial Scholarship at Vancouver Community College, I would like to express my gratitude for the recognition and support provided to me through this award,” said Grystsensko. “While studying at VCC, I have gained a lot of knowledge about fine dining and the incredible world of high-end kitchens. My time at the college has provided me with many opportunities and my development would not be possible without my highly professional instructors and the friends that I have met along the way.”
